Sam Pirt, the virtuoso accordionist of the duo, has also performed with 422, a previous Radio 2 Folk awards winner. Over the years, Sam has shared the stage with the likes of Kathryn Tickell, The Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Jez Lowe, Brian Finnegan, Brian McNeill, and numerous others. Furthermore, he is the visionary behind Ethno England.
The band’s percussionist, Gary Hammond, boasts a rich history of performing and recording with The Beautiful South for over a decade. His stellar career includes collaborations with Nina Simone and frequent involvement with various groups across World, Jazz, and Pop genres.

Gary Hammond - Master Of Percussion
Gary Hammond’s journey into percussion began more organically than most. Before he could own a pair of bongos, his knees, chest, and cheeks served as his instruments. His passion for percussion has seen him amass an astonishing collection of over 400 different instruments over the years. His talent lies in his ability to imbue every tune The Hut People play with a unique rhythm and sound.
Entirely self-taught, Hammond has honed his skills by creatively absorbing and replicating the sounds he’s heard throughout his musical career. He’s been a resident of Hull since 1995, having moved there after joining The Beautiful South as a session musician.
His time with The Beautiful South provided him the fortune of travelling the globe, broadening his musical horizons and experiences. Another memorable milestone of his career was the opportunity to play alongside the legendary Nina Simone.
Throughout his percussive odyssey, Hammond has explored and embraced a multitude of music genres. These diverse styles have deeply influenced The Hut People’s unique sound. Starting with jazz and world music, his musical adventure led him to the realm of folk, thanks to his fellow bandmate, Sam.

Sam Pirt - Accordion Maestro
Hailing from Goole in Yorkshire, Sam Pirt is a pianist and accordionist known for his infectious smile and profound musical talent. He started his journey with early bands such as Soup Dragon and The Barleycorn Band, where he first collaborated with Ian. His musical partnership with guitarist David Wood (of CrossCurrent) was forged in 1996 at Folkworks, leading to the formation of their duo, AAAAG.
1996 was a milestone year for Sam, as he became a part of the first English group to attend the Ethno Folk Camp. This experience sparked a deep fascination in him for global music. Subsequent visits to Ethno with the band 422 in 2000 and 2001 led to him being invited as an Artistic Leader for the next three years. By 2004, he realized his dream of establishing his own version of Ethno in England, which has since blossomed tremendously.
Sam is also a key member of the band 422, which was formed in 1999 after winning the BBC Radio Two Young Folk award. Over the years, they have toured extensively, gracing stages in Sweden and Germany, and performing at renowned festivals such as Tonder, Cambridge, and Sidmouth. They’ve also released three albums under Fellside records.
It was at a bonfire where Sam first met Gary while both were working on a project together. After a few years, they finally managed to have a jam session, which led to the birth of The Hut People. Their journey since then has been nothing short of extraordinary, with their music receiving accolades such as being voted number 1 in Musicports Festival poll for two consecutive years and releasing an album with Fellside records.
Sam’s passion for music took him to Kenya, where he immersed himself in the local culture, learning traditional songs and dances from the Sengwer Tribe. During this enriching experience, he was given the tribal name Kiprop, meaning ‘bringer of rain’. His lessons on the Pugan (African Guitar) from Samwell Pargetuni have not only given him a dear friend but also a profound understanding of the Sengwer Tribe’s music.
